Hello my_Perl,

Following is an example to remove only first space between characters.
Code:
 echo "a bc d efg hij k" | sed 's/ //'

Output will be as follows.
Code:
abc d efg hij k

If you want to remove all spaces then following may help.
Code:
echo "a bc d efg hij k" | sed 's/ //g'

Output will be as follows then.
Code:
abcdefghijk

Thanks,
R. Singh

Hi

Thanks for the reply. But, I want to remove only one space between two characters irrespective of number of spaces (may two or three or four).

For example, if the input is:

c h a r a c t e r s

the output must be:

characters

Thanks Smilie

Hello my_perl,

If you would have tried both of my solutions you would have got the correct answer, never mind you could use following one.
Code:
echo "c h a r a c t e r s" | sed 's/ //g'

Output will be as follows.
Code:
characters

Also request you to please mention sample input and expected output with O.S details in your posts so that we may get better idea on your requirement. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
R. Singh

Your request is by no means clear, and the sample doesn't help. Do I read it correct that you want to reduce the number of spaces between any non-space chars by one? Try
Code:
sed 's/ \( *\)/\1/g' file
