Run shell script LPADMIN
Hi All,

I'm new to shell scripts.
I have the following LPADMIN script that runs ok when I run in in OSX Automator "Run shell Scripts":

Shell: /bin/bash

here is the line:

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p Copy-room-ljetP4015 -E -v lpd://192.168.1.1 -m /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP\ LaserJet\ P4010_P4510\ Series.gz  -L "BEHMED_LJETP40"

How can I save it as an executable shell file so I could call and run in in terminal?

Please advise,

Create a bin directory in your home directory (if it doesn't already exist):

mkdir $HOME/bin

It is OK if that gives an error message something like:

mkdir: /Users/your_login_name/bin: File exists

Then create a file containing your script:

cat > $HOME/bin/startljetp40 <<EOF
#!/bin/ksh
/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p Copy-room-ljetP4015 -E -v lpd://192.168.1.1 -m /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP\ LaserJet\ P4010_P4510\ Series.gz  -L "BEHMED_LJETP40"
EOF

and make it executable:

chmod +x $HOME/bin/startljetp40

After that, when your are logged in, you can run your command by typing in the command:

startljetp40

in a terminal window.

Don't forget to add $HOME/bin to your session's PATH, or to create an alias startljetp40="$HOME/bin/startljetp40".

For bash, ksh, and any other shell on OS X that sources /etc/profile when starting a login session, the default exported PATH environment variable includes $HOME/bin. (It also includes /usr/local/bin, /usr/bin, /bin, /usr/sbin, and /sbin before $HOME/bin and . after $HOME/bin.)
