I want to know what is the different between the following:
Code:
$VAR1
${VAR2}
"${VAR3}"

Are they equivalent?

Thanks in advance

Here is what double quotes does:
Code:
$ x="123             456"
$ echo $x
123 456
$ echo "$x"
123             456
$

Here is an example where you need braces:
Code:
$
$ x="11111"
$ echo $x5

$ echo ${x}5
111115
$

But sometimes people use braces or quotes where they are not strictly needed just to make the code more readable. Example above...the quotes I put around the 11111.
