NB (c-->0) will decrement further, and in very long files can wrap around to positive values.
The usual safe expression is (c && c--).

This is not likely to be a problem in awk. Remember that arithmetic in awk is done using double precision floating point values; not long int. If you subtract 1 from a HUGE negative floating point value, you might end up with the value before and after the subtraction being the same value, but the sign should not change.
