So change FS=";" in your script to FS=' *; *' and try again.

The FS I suggested in post #22 got rid of leading spaces in fields 2 through NF and got rid of trailing spaces in fields 1 through NF-1.

The standards say that FS is an extended regular expression, and I don't know of any systems that don't allow an ERE specifying multiple characters to be used as the field separator.

Some implementations allow FS="" to specify that every character on an input line is a separate field. Many implementations do not allow that, and the standards say that the behavior is unspecified in this case.
