Sun Bash ${PIPESTATUS[@]}

I'm using this form of variable setting to use the exit status of a pipeline e.g.

Code:
foo=$(date|grep -i thursday)$?
echo $foo
echo ${PIPESTATUS[@]}

or $foo later in a script.

On days other than Thursday it results in:

1
0

For some reason the PIPESTATUS array doesn't show.

I'd like to see PIPESTATUS e.g. 0 1 (for successful date command and unsuccessful grep).

I still need $foo (or the full pipeline exit status) in a variable for later testing.

I'm using bash 4.1.11 on Solaris 11.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi,
The result in the PIPESTATUS array is the sub shell return that is the return of the last command of this sub shell (here grep).
A workaround example:
Code:
$ date
sam. févr.  7 01:43:32 CET 2015
$ date | grep -i ven >/dev/null
$ foo=${PIPESTATUS[@]}
$ echo $foo
0 1
$ date | grep -i sam >/dev/null
$ foo=${PIPESTATUS[@]}
$ echo $foo
0 0

Regards.

With this
Code:
foo=( $(/bin/date|grep -i thu; echo ${PIPESTATUS[@]}) )
echo ${foo[-1]}

the echo will show the last pipe element's exit status, equivalent to $?.
