Try:
Code:
sed 's/.* //' file

--
or awk
Code:
awk '{print $NF}' file

Code:
sed 's/^ *[^ ][^ ]* *//'

Remove optional leading spaces, the first non-space character and any immediately following non-space characters, a space and any immediately following spaces. Now, that's the first word, as the title requested. The example contradicts that, and says keep the last word:
Code:
sed 's/.* \([^ ][^ ]*\) */\1/'

Which allows for and removes trailing spaces on the line. Remove everything up to a space that is followed by a non-space, preserve the non-space and any immediately following non-space characters, but discard any trailing spaces on the line.
