Count behaviour when using su -

Gentlemen,
OK, I have an odd issue here perhaps someone can shed some light for me. When running a script as its user/owner the below pause/wait works just fine. When a developer has used su - to assume the username the pause does not happen... This is a HPUX11.00 machine, I have copied the blurb of offending code below.

list file with line numbers
list_file() {
modcount=0
cat /tmp/$USER.tmp | while read w1 w2 w3 w4 w5 w6; do
set "$w1" "$w2" "$w3" "$w4" "$w5" "$w6"
let "modcount = $COUNT % 14 "

if [ $modcount -eq 0 ]
then
echo "\n\t\t\tPress return to continue \c"
read ANS <$TTY
echo "$home"
echo "$down$down$down$down$down"
echo "$cl_end"
fi

Any advice would be appreciated,
Aaron

A co-worker identified the problem. the second read is grabbing from TTY, which
is still associated with the initial user not the SU'd target....
