Why have so many arguments and then have to pick out the field you want?
Code:
ps -e -o pid= | tr -d "tab" | paste -sd,

If you want just 10 rows, add a head into the pipeline:-
Code:
ps -e -o pid= | tr -d "tab" | head -10 | paste -sd,

Have I missed something obvious that's going to make me look silly? Smilie

There are really too many columns. You want to sort on pcpu and print pid, so all you need is
Code:
ps -e -o pcpu= -o pid= | sort -n -k 1 -r | awk 'NR>10 {exit} {print $2}' | paste -sd,
