my answer would pretty much be the same as stobo's. use the cut command, then direct it into a second file, then move that file back into the original if you're satisfied with the result.

Deleting specific fields from file

Hi
Thank you all.
If i need to print fields 1,2, then 5 to 9 then 11. Is there any other way or i have to specify only as

awk -F, '{ print $1","$2","$5","$6","$7","$8","$9","$11 }

cat file1 | cut -d',' -f1,2,5-9,11 >file2

awk and sed use more system resources, i might be mistaken, if so, then correct me ...

That is a UUOC. In your case, the number of processes are two; cat and cut.

Code:
cut -d',' -f1,2,5-9,11 <file1 >file2

Deleting specific columns of a file

I am able to cut the columns as I wanted. Thank you.
When I am doing so. I am facing another one problem

Actually I am manipulating a CSV file which is as I have given in my first post of this thread.
Whenever there is a value as “1”,“Gerry,charm”,”1111” the cut command is considering gerry and charm as separate field. So if I give
Cat file | cut -d',' -f3
It is giving charm” instead of 1111 as output.
Is there any way to resolve it.
