In original post stated that the shell being used is ksh on a SunOS server; so we have a ksh88 which meets basic POSIX shell requirements. Based on Corona688's suggestion, the following should work:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
I=1
while [ $I -le "$v_colcnt" ]
do      # whatever
        I=$((I + 1))
done

If you wanted to go with /bin/sh on a SunOS system (a 1980's Bourne shell) I think you have to use expr rather than let:
Code:
        I=`expr $I + 1`
