maybe awk can be used here? the goal here is to be able to do this without calling two commands.
Then use 'IFS' to give you a helping hand:-
(Store the default 'IFS' first and restore when finished.)
Code:
Last login: Sun Sep 7 09:46:23 on console
AMIGA:barrywalker~> ifs_str="$IFS"
AMIGA:barrywalker~> IFS=" ,:[]"
AMIGA:barrywalker~> VAL4=($(echo "7 3,2:38[3]4567"))
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[0]}"
7
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[1]}"
3
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[2]}"
2
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[3]}"
38
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[4]}"
3
AMIGA:barrywalker~> echo "${VAL4[5]}"
4567
AMIGA:barrywalker~> IFS="$ifs_str"
AMIGA:barrywalker~> _

i was looking for something more along the lines of this:

Code:
#!/bin/sh

NAME[0]="Zara"
NAME[1]="Qadir"
NAME[2]="Mahnaz"
NAME[3]="Ayan"
NAME[4]="Daisy"
echo "First Index: ${NAME[0]}"
echo "Second Index: ${NAME[1]}"

echo "First Method: ${NAME[*]}"
echo "Second Method: ${NAME[@]}"

this code should work on any unix system that exist. i would like to know if it is at all possible to modify it a bit to do what i want.

I repeat, /bin/sh on Solaris system is a 1980's vintage Bourne shell. That shell DOES NOT support array variables. The code above will not work on any UNIX system that has a Bourne shell as /bin/sh. Even a shell that meets all POSIX and Single UNIX Specification requirements for a shell is not required to support arrays.

You asked for something that would work on any UNIX or Linux system and I gave you a way to do that. If you insist on using arrays, your script will not be portable to nearly as any systems.
