Hi all,

I need a little help with a short shell script. I am trying to copy the beginning of multiple files which the end of the filenames change daily and this will help to copy certain files at the end of the night.

Code:

for f in `cat /var/app/FILENAMES/SYSTEM_FILES` 
do 
  cp /var/app/LISTS/$f* /var/app/SYSEM_LISTS > /dev/null 2>&1 
done

SYSTEM_FILES is a text file containing the beginning of certain filenames.
I want whatever is in this document copied to the SYSTEM_LISTS folder.

When I run the script, nothing is being copied. I placed an echo statement (echo $f) to confirm the text document is being read. It seems like the wildcard * is not being considered. Is there something I need to change to get the script to recognize the * wildcard (assuming that is the problem).

Maybe the T is missing in the destination directory?
Why suppress the stderr?
Wildcard globbing can be disabled with set -f or if the shell was invoked with -f.

Hi shamrock,

Files are moved into the /var/app/LISTS directory daily. The SYSTEM_FILES file contains the names of certain files. $f should contain all the names found in SYSTEM_FILES and only copy those files to another directory while not copying those names not found in SYSTEM_FILES.

An small example of the file

The files placed in /var/app/LISTS would be like the following

NON_US_ITM_A_20140904

The file names could end with an A or F and the current date. This is what I hope the * would pick up as the end of the fileanames could vary.

I tried the script, it works. please check if your dir is correct. and try ${f}* as well
