I need to compare the size of a file to what it's size was 20min ago. So far my outline script is:

ls -ls /home > filesizeafter.txt

compare filesizeafter.txt filesizebefore.txt > filesizechange.txt

if /home filesizechange.txt > 100 {
email root;
}

ls -ls /home > filesizebefore.txt

My idea was to output the file size information into a file called filesizeafter.txt then compare it with filesizebefore.txt which was run 20min ago, then I would compare the two file sizes and put that information into a new file and look for an increase of more than 100mb. The only thing I don't know how to do is compare certain data between two files and the best way to compare those two. It needs to search each user's home directory separately which is why I thought putting the results in another file to sort them would work. This is a homework assignment for my unix introduction class.

Question is here:
Create an automated routine that checks to see if any of the non-administrative user home directories have increased in size by more than 100MB in a single 20min period.
If any of the non-administrative user home directories have increased by more than 100MB in 20min then send an email message to the root user.(email should contain list of all users with change)
