Lookup value from another file
Hi Experts,

I need you help in coding the below scenario in unix. Please help

Lets say i have below 2 records in my file1

Code:
a;b;c
a;d

and in file 2 , i have the below information

Code:
a:alpha
b:beta
c:code
d:delta


then i want to lookup on file2 and replace my content in file 1 with description, expected output is like :

Code:
alpha;beta;code
alpha;delta

Slightly tricky since your delimiter changes, but doable.
Code:
$ awk -F":" -v OFS=";" 'NR==FNR { A[$1]=$2 ; next } # Store all lines from file2
        FS != OFS { FS=OFS ; $0=$0 } # When switching to file1, switch delimiter and re-split first line.
        { for(N=1; N<=NF; N++) if($N in A) $N = A[$N] } 1' file2 file1

alpha;beta;code
alpha;delta

$

If your version of awk supports regular expressions as a separator, you can reduce this a bit:

Code:
$ awk -F"[:;]" -v OFS=";" 'NR==FNR { A[$1]=$2 ; next } ; { for(N=1; N<=NF; N++) if($N in A) $N = A[$N] } 1' file2 file1

alpha;beta;code
alpha;delta

$
