Grabing a file from a directory

Hi guys:
I need to grab a particular file(s) from a directory.
the file name is abc.xyz.2006020101200

I need to grab it based on the bold numbers. The bolded numbers are the date and such files are created everyday.

My initial script was to grab the listing of that directory and then cut out the bolded part and dump it into a file and then check from there if a particular file with say 20060201 exits. But this is cumbersome cause I have to read every line in that file and overtime the file becomes huge becaues the actual files(abc.xyz.date#### are never deleted from the directory.

Is there an easy way of doing this ?

Thanks in advance,

M

If you are always reading the current days file it would be:

#> mydate="abc.xyz.$(date +"%Y%m%d")01200"
#> echo $mydate
abc.xyz.2006020101200
