sed failing with multiline html loaded with metacharacters
I have html files (newlines ending in linefeed) with metacharacter-laden multiline text I want to replace. To matters more complicated, the first line may appear elsewhere in the file, so I need these lines as a block. I can replace individual lines, but am failing to come up with anything that can read across all the lines or even just two of the lines.
Here is the text I want to find to replace:

Just have sed add additional lines with N until yu have enough to do your work.This pulls in the whole file:

sed '
  :loop
  $!{
    N
    b loop
   }
. . . .
' in_file >out_fle

Line feeds between lines are literally '\n' but match '.'.

Say you your file is file.html.
Save the old (to be replaced) text in the file old.
Save your new (replacement) text in the file new.
Then run

diff -c old new | patch file.html

It will apply the differences directly to file.html.

If you want to modify multiple files this way, you need a loop:

for file in file1.html file2.html
do
  diff -c old new | patch "$file"
done
