So, the permissions of the user who wants to run the mv command has permission to search and write in the target directory, permission to search (but not write) in the source directory, and permission to read the file being moved. Without permission to write in the source directory, you can't remove the file from the source directory (so mv will fail).
With the current permission on these files, you could copy (cp) source_dir/filename to dir_to_be_copied/filename and the new file will have owner ID xiam12m and have group ID azthetlw (since the set-GID bit is set on the destination directory). You could also link (ln) source_dir/filename to dir_to_be_copied/filename and the new link will have the same owner and group as the source file (and any changes made to the file using either name will affect both names). But you can't remove existing links or create any new links to any files in source_dir.
The application which is moving the file falls in other group
That means the highlight permissions are use to mv
It is missing the w (write) permission for others in the source_dir
The lazy and potentially unsafe way of doing it is chmod o+w source_dir
That will essentially allow anyone to delete any content in that directory.
The other way is to share the directory using a selective group.
Give the ability for the group to control the dir:
Now find the group that the application runs with, or if possible make the application member of that group and change the source_dir to belong to the same group that the application.
I don't care at all who owns the directory you are currently sitting in. All that matters is what user ID and group IDs are being used by mv when it is trying to move a file, what the owner IDs, group IDs, and modes are on the source and target directories, and (if you are moving a file across a mount point) the owner ID, group ID and mode on the file being moved.

When I listed one directory in Sun, it showed that :

I don't know meaning of the character "s" in "rws" above. I have searched in Sun admin documents but no result. Would you please explain it ? :)
Thank you so much. (1 Reply)
