No, it does not, which was my entire point -- directly using its return code instead of getting its text output.

Every program returns a number when it quits, 0 for success, nonzero for any sort of error. It's much easier to script things using this code than to capture a program's text when there was no need to.

Rather than redirect greps output to /dev/zero | null, you could just tell grep to be quiet..
As in:
Code:
grep -q GRUB /etc/default/grub && echo "default grub contains GRUB.. what a surprise :P"

Or
Code:
if grep -q GRUB /etc/default/grub
then    echo "default grub contains GRUB.. what a surprise :P"
else    echo "your /etc/default/grub must be faulty!"
fi
