Extract data from a file

Hi ,

I am having a file which is PIPE delimited like this :

file.txt
Code:
aus|start|10:00:00
nz|start|11:00:00
aus|end|10:10:00
us|start|10:00:00
nz|end|11:10:00
us|end|11:00:00
.
.
.

I want to extract an output file like this based on start time and end time for each countries:

Code:
aus|start|10:00:00|end|10:10:00
nz|start|11:00:00|end|11:10:00
us|start|10:00:00|end|11:00:00

right now i am doing something like :
Code:
grep start file.txt>out1.txt
grep end file.txt>out2.txt

and clubbing the above out put files

can any one suggest in better way to achieve the output

Code:
awk 'BEGIN {FS = OFS = "|"} {if($2 == "start") {s[$1] = $3} else if($2 == "end") {e[$1] = $3}} END {for(x in s) print x, "start", s[x], "end", e[x]}' file

Adding a time difference could be done for example like this:
Code:
awk '
  {
    i=$1
    $1=x
    A[i]=A[i] $0
    split($NF,T,/:/)
    secs=3600*T[1]+60*T[2]+T[3]
    diff=secs-S[i]
    if(diff<0) diff+=86400
    S[i]=S[i] ? diff : secs
  }
  $2=="end" {
    print i A[i], S[i]/60 " mins"
  }
' FS=\| OFS=\| file
