Please put lsof -p $$ atop your ifconfig $i dhcp status in post #1 and post the result.
What system and what editor do you use?

i can not use lsof command over here , as i am performing this task on Solaris.Could you suggest some solution for solaris.

Just noticed Don Cragun had a better approach above, but the two redirects seemed to be reversed:

I was going to say the same scrutinizer, for by what I see , the output, IS correctly redirected, but no one mentionned error... that said the thread owner should have noticed, and so mention not how to redirect since that is working but how to not display anything on screen...

@vbe, I agree.. I was thinking maybe none of the interfaces were under dhcp control for example, so all output would appear on stderr and he did not realize it was stderr..

Redirection output

Hi there I have a script that runs but it outputs everything onto the screen instead of a file. I've tried using the > outputfile.txt however all it does is dump the output to the screen and creates an outputfile.txt but doesn't put anything in that file. Any help would be appreciated ...
