Wrench How to match certain users from password file?
I need to match all users starting from ab and cd. All the users are having five letters in total. ie: ab123
I tried below, but many other users with more than five letters are also appearing. I need to catch only users starting with ab & cd that has only five letters. possible?

awk -F: '$1 ~ /^ab/ {print $1}' /etc/passwd

You can use awk:

awk -F: ' (/^cd/ || (^ab) ) && length($1)==5' /etc/passwd

I had to modify a bit to get my result

 awk -F: ' (/^cd/ || /^ab/) && length($1)==5' /etc/passwd

Alternatively try:
