Help with shell script

Hi all,
I want to replace a pattern in between two lines with another pattern.I tried this using perl script.But i wanted to try this using shell script.I should include this in a script which already exists and try accessing web.xml.

file name:web.xml
Code:
<security-constraint>
      <web-resource-collection>
         <web-resource-name>HttpInvokers</web-resource-name>

An example security config that only allows users with the
            role HttpInvoker to access the HTTP invoker servlets

         <url-pattern>/restricted/*</url-pattern>
         <http-method>GET</http-method>
         <http-method>POST</http-method>
      </web-resource-collection>
      <auth-constraint>
         <role-name>HttpInvoker</role-name>
      </auth-constraint>
   </security-constraint>
   <login-config>
      <auth-method>BASIC</auth-method>
      <realm-name>JBoss HTTP Invoker</realm-name>
   </login-config>

   <security-role>
      <role-name>HttpInvoker</role-name>
   </security-role>
in this example i want

<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>

these two lines in between
Code:
<url-pattern>/restricted/*</url-pattern>
<http-method>GET</http-method>

these two lines
required output:
Code:
<url-pattern>/restricted/*</url-pattern>
<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
<http-method>GET</http-method>

Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w

open(IN, "< test.xml");
open(OUT, ">output.xml");

$EJB=0;
$JMI=0;
$REST=0;

while ($line = <IN>)
{
if ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/restricted/\*</url-pattern>/)
  {
  $REST=1;
  print OUT "$line";
  }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/\*</url-pattern>/  && $REST==1)
    {
    $EJB=1;
    print OUT "$line";
    }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/\*</url-pattern>/ && $REST==1)
    {
    $JMI=1;
    print OUT "$line";
    }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<http-method>GET</http-method>/ && $REST==1)
    {
       if ($EJB == 0 && $JMI==0)
        {
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";
        $EJB=0;
        $JMI=0;
        }
        elsif ($EJB == 1 && $JMI==0)
        {

        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";

        $JMI=0;
        }
        elsif ($EJB == 0 && $JMI==1)
        {
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";

        $EJB=0;

        }
       else
        {
        $JMI=0;
        $EJB=0;
        }
    print OUT "$line";
    }
  else
  {
  print OUT "$line";
  }
}

close(IN);
close(OUT);
use File::Copy;
copy("output.xml","test.xml") or die "Copy failed: $!";

Why do you want a shell script? awk, perl, and sed are tools created and optimized to do exactly that: find patterns in text files and replace them. So you should have a very good reason or see an enormous drawback to prefer shell.
BTW, if I read your request correctly, you don't want to replace anything but insert two extra lines between patterns, don't you?

It is doable in standard shell. A function is easy to use:
Code:
replacexml(){
while IFS="" read -r line
do
  case $line in
  *'<url-pattern>/restricted/*</url-pattern>'*)
    printf "%s
" "$line"
    skip=1
    ;;
  *'<http-method>GET</http-method>'*)
    printf "%s
" "$@"
    skip=""
    ;;
  esac
  [ -z "$skip" ] && printf "%s
" "$line"
done
}

Test with
Code:
replacexml \
'<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>' \
'<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>' < web.xml

If this looks okay and you want to write back into web.xml:
Code:
cp web.xml web.xml.old &&
replacexml \
'<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>' \
'<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>' \
< web.xml.old > web.xml

Hi MadeInGermany ,
Thanks for your help.Am ok with the perl script now.But i have a small doubt regarding accessing root files.Web.xml is the root file.I have called perl script from shell script setup.sh which i should run as root user.But its throwing me an error like this.

Unsuccessful open on filename containing newline at ./test.pl line 3.
readline() on closed filehandle IN at ./test.pl line 10.
Copy failed: No such file or directory at ./test.pl line 66.

for this code
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w

open(IN, "< $/centina/sa/jboss-5.1.0.GA/server/default/deploy/http-invoker.sar/invoker.warWEB-INF/web.xml");
open(OUT, ">output.xml");

$EJB=0;
$JMI=0;
$REST=0;

while ($line = <IN>)
{
if ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/restricted/\*</url-pattern>/)
  {
  $REST=1;
  print OUT "$line";
  }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/\*</url-pattern>/  && $REST==1)
    {
    $EJB=1;
    print OUT "$line";
    }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/\*</url-pattern>/ && $REST==1)
    {
    $JMI=1;
    print OUT "$line";
    }
    elsif ($line =~ m/<http-method>GET</http-method>/ && $REST==1)
    {
       if ($EJB == 0 && $JMI==0)
        {
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";
        $EJB=0;
        $JMI=0;
        }
        elsif ($EJB == 1 && $JMI==0)
        {

        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/JMXInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";

        $JMI=0;
        }
        elsif ($EJB == 0 && $JMI==1)
        {
        print OUT "   <url-pattern>/EJBInvokerServlet/*</url-pattern>
";

        $EJB=0;

        }
       else
        {
        $JMI=0;
        $EJB=0;
        }
    print OUT "$line";
    }
  else
  {
  print OUT "$line";
  }
}

close(IN);
close(OUT);
use File::Copy;
copy("output.xml","$/centina/sa/jboss-5.1.0.GA/server/default/deploy/http-invoker.sar/invoker.warWEB-INF/web.xml") or die "Copy failed: $!";

any help is deeply appreciated.

Code:
open(IN, "< $/centina/sa/jboss-5.1.0.GA/server/default/deploy/http-invoker.sar/invoker.warWEB-INF/web.xml");

Why this "$" sign in open function as you have specified absolute path.

Actually am new to perl script,i referred setup.sh to know how they located a file,they have represented address with $,so i gave path like that

No need of "$" in open function which you posted.
Suppose you store filename in variable then use that variable
e.g.
Code:
$filename="/path/to/your/file";
open(FH,"$filename") or die "Cannot open file to read
";
