Modification in script

Hi,

I have below script, i want to monitor that that ntp server listed in setting is under sync or not. I wrote below script but it is not working properly.

Here are problems, first it should server under sync if "*" shows and rest if shows "+" it means it is next server in waiting list. Below is my script please check it.

Code:
if [ `ntpq -pn 78.100.70.146 | grep -E -c '^\*'` == 0 ]; then

 #Sync responded, OK
 echo "1-SYnc"

else

 echo "0"

fi

###############
#sh ntp.sh
78.100.70.146: timed out, nothing received
***Request timed out
1-SYnc
###############

Note: how i can remove error "timed out, nothing received"

Currently below is the output of ntpq -pn

# ntpq -pn
     remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter
==============================================================================
*78.100.70.146   10.121.4.253     2 u   20   64  377   18.802   -2.979   8.312

Try this instead of the backticks:

Code:
$(ntpq -pn 78.100.70.146 | grep -E -c '^\*')

Suppress ntpq errors with
Code:
ntpq -pn 78.100.70.146 2>/dev/null | grep ...

If you're sure the error msg won't be matched by the grep pattern, you could try (in bash)
Code:
$(ntpq -pn 78.100.70.146 |& grep -E -c '^\*')

Note: |& is bash4 and it is synonymous to 2>&1 |.
