Why use cat? Just tell grep the name of the file.

Why use grep? AWK can filter the lines itself and exit after printing the first match.

Why bother with read and the here-string (aka <<<) redirection? A simple command substitution would work just fine and would be much more portable.

Code:

CPU_VENDOR_ID=$(awk -F: '/vendor_id/ {print $2; exit}' /proc/cpuinfo)
