Parent/Child Scripting logic Question
I have Parent script that will execute a child script. The child script will take about 2 hours to run and I wanted to somehow build a logic for parent.sh to wait and perform ps -ef|grep cp|grep -v on the child.sh cp process and loop and check return code of child.sh $? as well. Once they are both good 0 then move on..if not then loop and keep on checking the return code.
Can someone give me the logic of how that would work?

parent.sh

#execute child.sh
./child.sh
# write loop to check for return code of ps and child.sh. if 0 then move else else sleep anc check.


child.sh
Code:
#the child script is build dynamically
cp /u01/*.* /u00/

I figured it out..

export a=`ps -ef|grep top|grep -v grep|wc -l`
echo "there are currently $a processes running for the top command"
if [ $a -eq 0 ];then
        echo "copy is finished"
        filecopyfinished=true
        exit
else
        sleep 10
        echo "copy is not finished, waiting"
        filecopyfinished=false
fi
done

# 4

Now that you have got a solution. Try this as well.

Use the kill -0 $PID feature.

Look at this post. That should help you out.
