Rsync, compression, progress and logging

Hello.

Using Rsync to synchronize files on 2 red hat servers, works fine.
Trying to use the compress options, but I don't know if it is working?
Nothing logged in the progress messages.
Not sure in my case if compression will be helpful in my case, so I would like to see some statistics.
Is an RSync daemon required on the target host to use compression, if not, how does the data get uncompressed?

Thanks in advance.

If you don't use a daemon, it logs in with ssh. I think it'd use shell utilities for compression.

Can you provide the command options you're running. You say you don't know if it's working...did any file transfer occur? Look at the time stamp of the files.

Rsync won't compress certain file types like jpg, mp4...things essentially already compressed. Try placing time in front of the command and note differences. Note: Compression option is designed to reduce the time to transfer over the network.

I think rsync uses zlib calls for compression and decompression and not the shell utilities. What problem are you trying to solve here?
