since most people here access servers remotely through xterms, vt-100 emulators and putty -- not that many here access an actual command line console -- they use the words "console" and "terminal" interchangeably and they just generally mean the terminal or terminal emulator they are looking at ...

so while your code correctly sends the output to the /dev/console, it also sends the output to the terminal the user is actually looking at ...

we need to be careful though that redirects to stdout actually does send the output to the appropriate screen (i.e., xterm, putty, etc.) the user is looking at and not to a console the user may never have access to ...

The only way I can connect to it is the SER MGT console, but I'm not getting anything to display (in Hyper terminal, or PUTTY) when I boot it.
