Bash vs shell

hi i am having my code ,which call a funtion under a given condition in a case statement as below
Code:
error()
{
echo "Do you want to enter PO again(Y/N):"
read answer
case "$answer" in
Y) main
;;
y) main
;;
N) exit
;;
n) exit
;;
*) ;;
esac
}

if i run the prog with bash filename ,the program is executing correctly but if i execute with sh filename the program exit suddenly,,,any suggestion please??

Bash is a shell.

Which OS are you using?

Please show the code with the "condition" that calls the error function.

i am using below statement in my prog,this may cause such an error
Code:
for i in `cat temp.txt`

Code:
var=`expr $var + 1`

sh in Solaris is the (ancient) Bourne shell. It's a million miles apart from BASH.

The simple answer to your question is don't run it using sh if you didn't write it to work in sh.

While bash does have a lot of extensions above and beyond what the Bourne shell accepts, the lines above would be treated the same by both. But, as Scott said, why are you running a bash script with anything other than bash?

If you need to convert your bash script to an sh script for some reason, invoke it with:
Code:
bash -xv filename

and with:
Code:
sh -xv filename

and compare the resulting traces to see what needs to be rewritten to use Bourne shell syntax.
