Shell Programming and Scripting

Hi,

I am new to unix and i started some scripting recently. Please go through the following script i wrote.

file='path../tfile'
file1='path../tfile1'
rmfile='path../test2'
C1=1
C2=1
exec 3< $file1
while read LINE1; do
  read LINE2 <&3
    a=$LINE1
    b=`expr $LINE2 - 1`
    sed -i".bkp" "$a","$b"'d' $rmfile 
  let C1=$C1+1
  let C2=$C2+1
done < $file

The above script was written thinking that it wil remove the lines from the file rmfile from the line nbr $a to $b . But for the first read its deleting the liens properly. but for the next time it reading the line numbers $a and $b, its deleting some other reocords as the line nbr got changed now as before two lines were already deleted. But i want to delete actual lines present in the file taking these line nbrs as input. Please get me out of this prob.

Not sure I understand your request. Your sed -i will do an in-place-edit, so in every loop the already modified rmfile will be edited. If your numbers have to refer to the original, intact file, you need to back that up with some quite sophisticated maths, relating old and new numbers and ranges to each other.
