Based on some assumptions:
Code:
awk '
        BEGIN {
                A["200"]
                A["202"]
                A["203"]
        }
        $0 in A {
                print "The context is " P " the character is " $0 " count " ++A[$0]
        }
        {
                P = $0
        }
' file

Yoda

is gives the following output

Code:

The context is 228 the character is 202 count 1
The context is 211 the character is 200 count 1
The context is 200 the character is 202 count 2
The context is 212 the character is 200 count 2
The context is 32 the character is 202 count 3
The context is 222 the character is 200 count 3
The context is 225 the character is 202 count 4
The context is 228 the character is 202 count 17

for example context 228 followed by character 202 repeated many times with different counts

I need to print the total count of context 228 followed by 202 one time with total count of it

Thanks

Ok, I assumed you want to print previous record each time you encounter record: 200/202/203

Here is a modified awk code:
Code:
awk '
        BEGIN {
                A["200"]
                A["202"]
                A["203"]
        }
        P && $0 in A {
                R[P","$0]++
        }
        {
                P = $0
        }
        END {
                for ( k in R )
                {
                        split ( k, C, "," )
                        print "The context is " C[1] " the character is " C[2] " count " R[C[1]","C[2]]
                }
        }
' file

Thanks

Sorted by descending numeric context value, descending numeric character value, descending numeric count, or some combination of these?
# 13

descending numeric count

Thanks

Add to the end of the last line of Yoda's script:
Code:
 | sort -k10,10nr

Let me know if you'd like to make the context or character value fields secondary or tertiary sort keys (ascending or descending).
