To find the exact pattern

My Input :
Hi editor
this is the
exact
pattern
which we looking for
the
previous
patternmatch


My code:

awk  '/pattern/ { print a } { a = $0 }' 

Current output :
exact
previous


Required output: exact

I need only the output "exact" anyone help me on this

you wanna print line befor where pattern is found? in your file will that pattern would be first word? or line would be only pattern?

like
pattern
patternword
pattern word

do you want to satisfy 3rd combination as well?

Add word boundaries to avoid a partial match
