You are using a for loop for files/directories that end with .x.deb, but the actual directories have the extension .deb.x

Thats correct, I want to rename directories.

Not files.

I mean .x.deb and .deb.x seem to be mixed up.

And this is the result (as you can see, it did sadly not work this time either)
Thank you for sending the script you used, and the error messages. Made it clear. As scrutinizer pointed out, your actual directory names are reversed from what you told us. Smilie To make it work with the actual directory names, try this, let us know what happens:
Code:
# Remove .deb.x extension from any directory name
DIR=/var/mobile/Media/Downloads
echo Before:
file $DIR/*

for old_sub in $DIR/*.deb.x; do
  if [ -d "$old_sub" ]; then
    new_sub=$(echo "$old_sub" | sed "s/\.deb\.x$//")
    mv "$old_sub" "$new_sub"
  fi
done

echo After:
file $DIR/*

That works. Thanks

I'm glad it's working now, and thanks for posting. Smilie

Actually it seems I was glad a bit too early.

It DOES work, however the script behaves differently when called from cmd or called from a .sh file

When called from Command line:
Output is as desired

When called from shell script file:
The desired output ASWELL as the unwanted *.deb.x folders are there.

puzzles me why though...
