Hi All,

I have a simple problem .
I am pulling the file from a remote server througha simple file transfer protocal (ftp ).

But I wanted to check before pulling the file ,whether the file is being written or in use by some other process and if so i dont want to pull the file and wait for some time .

can anyone know if this is possible in Linux ?
Bith mmy siource and destination are Linux 2.6.9-89.35.1.ELhugemem .please help and here goes my ftp script ..

The best way is to have the uploading client rename or move the file once it's done, so that files only appear in their ultimate destination once they're 100% complete. That way, you don't need to guess whether it's in use -- that can be unreliable, mistaking slow or broken uploads for complete.

Something like this:

put /path/to/local/file /temporary/folder/file
rename /temporary/folder/file /upload/folder/file

If /upload/folder and /temporary/folder are on the same disk partition, this will guarantee that any files appearing inside /upload/folder are 100% complete, since the move operation will only change which directory it resides in, not alter the file contents at all.
