To avoid the trap that alister pointed out, if negative values are expected in the file, preset p by adding p=$(getconf INT_MIN) to the end of the command.
That would not work because AWK implements all numbers, including integers, using type double.
Code:
$ getconf INT_MIN; getconf INT_MIN | awk '{print --$0}'
-2147483648
-2147483649

The simplest, correct solution is to just check if it's the first line: NR!=1 && $3<p.
