substitute the grep output

I have a file name called fruits.
In this file the prices keep on changing & the order in which fruits are listed keep on changing.
$ cat fruits
fruitname price/pound
redapples 30
grapes 50
oranges 20

$echo $custom_price
35

What I want to do is that if the file "fruits" contains pattern "apples" I want to change the price for apples in the file "fruits" from what is stored in the variable $custom_price. SO that the file "fruits" looks like this:
fruitname price/pound
redapples 35
grapes 50
oranges 20

I can extract the price for apples from the file , but how do I substitute it with $custom_price to the same file.
$ grep apples fruits | awk '{ print $NF }'
30

Thanks
Manij

Two things regarding this post.

Firstly; it's not in an appropriate forum - I will move it.

Secondly; is this homework??? I have never experienced a job where the cost of apples and grapes need to be manipulated in such a way.

Thanks
