How to use a variable in perl localtime()?
Hi all,

Code:
a=$1 ##
b=`echo "86400 * $a"|bc`
`perl -e 'use POSIX qw(strftime);$now_string = strftime "%d/%m/%Y", localtime(time-$b); print $now_string,"\n";' > date_file`

but im always getting current date; can any one suggest me any the improvement

the above works fine if i use some thing like
`perl -e 'use POSIX qw(strftime);$now_string = strftime "%d/%m/%Y", localtime(time-604800); print $now_string,"\n";' > date_file`

instead of $b

instead of $b
Your Perl one-liner is unable to read the value of the shell variable "b", hence it prints the current date.

One way to solve this could be to use Perl's predefined hash ENV to access environment variables. (perlvar - perldoc.perl.org)

$ export OFFSET=604800

$ perl -le 'use POSIX qw(strftime); $now = strftime "%d/%m/%Y", localtime(time - $ENV{OFFSET}); print $now'
14/04/2013
$
