blanks in file name

I have a file with a list of filenames. I want to work loopwise through the file and operate on each of the listed files. Normally I'd do something like:
for file in `cat $mydir/file-list`
do
echo $file >> $mydir/my.log
cp $mydir/$file $newdir
done

the problem is that my filenames contain embedded blanks and when I work with the $file variable it parses out on the blanks.
I've got a weird work around with an ugly awk and sed stmt that makes $file work ok in the echo - but it still doesn't work in the cp stmt.

any ideas?

Try this:
Code:
#! /usr/bin/ksh
IFS=""
while read file ; do
       echo "$file"
       cp "$mydir/$file" $newdir
done < $mydir/file-list  >> $mydir/my.log
exit 0

Note: a statement like this
echo $file >> $mydir/my.log
must open $mydir/my.log for each iteration of the loop. Opening the file once is faster. Since it is opened only once, maybe >> should be > if my.log is not cumulative for all runs.
