/home/ramesh/bin/connectdb1.sh takes 15 mins to complete execution as it fires a PLSQL query to the database.

Will your example wait for 15 mins for each script to complete before setting the value for rc1 ?

I was looking for executing all the three connectdb scripts to run parellely.

Also, please tell me what does -a and -o stand for in your example?

Yes, It does wait till ur connected1.sh gets complete. Sorry, I didn't notice the time lag. Smilie

-a => Logical AND
-o => Logical OR

You could use -a in both the cases. Sorry I added both.

What you can actually do is, you could export a variable from each of your scripts. say
Code:
export SCRIPT1="SUCCESS" #in case of successful execution

You can do the same to the other two as well. So the script can be modified as

Code:
#! /bin/sh

echo "Starting up 1st script"
/home/ramesh/bin/connectdb1.sh &
echo "Starting up 2nd script"
/home/ramesh/bin/connectdb2.sh &
echo "Starting up 3rd script"
/home/ramesh/bin/connectdb3.sh &

#Wait till all the scripts completes
while [ $(ps -ef | grep -c "connectdb") -ne 0 ]; then
do
       if [ "$SCRIPT1" = "SUCCESS" -a "$SCRIPT2" = "SUCCESS" -a "$SCRIPT3" = "SUCCESS" ]; then
             echo "Starting up 4th script"
             /home/ramesh/bin/calculate.sh
       else
             #mail logic here
             exit
       fi
done
echo "All scripts completed successfully"
exit
