How to print the lines in a file for the given string?
Hi,

I have a file with contents
Code:
test id text day
test sah dh dhs
yeay fg jsh jsjk


my need:

I give a string as a input, it check the file and display the lines with the given string

e.g
input : test

output:
Code:
test id text day
test sah dh dhs

You may use the while loop for continuous input till the time user enters something explicitly to exit.

Code:
echo "please input the text to search"
read REP
awk -v rep=$REP '$1 ~ rep { print }' filename

OR

you can use

Code:
egrep "$REP" filename

based on the column reference is needed.
