Grep all lines for a specific date in log-files

I need to grep all lines for "yesterday" in /var/log/messages. Dates are in the format "YYYY-MM-DD".

I tried like this

/var/log/messages | grep date -d '1 day ago' +'%Y/%m/%d


But it shows some syntax error.. I am a newbie. I dont have knowledge in shell scripting.... But I am learning...

Please help me

I am using Windows. . . I am using Putty for accessing unix log servers

And what is your OS and version of these unix log servers?

Try:

grep "$( date -d '1 day ago' +'%Y/%m/%d' )" /var/log/messages

Note: This will work only if you have GNU date

I also noticed that you mentioned: Dates are in the format "YYYY-MM-DD"

Then you have to change format to +'%Y-%m-%d'

Hello I have a file with nearly 90000 lines in x,y,z format but have some lines that I do not need to show. Is there anyway to delete those 3 lines after every 288 lines. Eg I keep the first 288 lines delete (289, 290 291); keep the next 288 lines after those and so on... Thanks (6 Replies)
