ksh or bash
Code:
z1= z2= z3=
while :
do
 read l
 z1="$z1 $l"
 read l
 z2="$z1 $l"
 if ( ! read l )
  then
   break
  fi
 z3="$z1 $l"
done < infile
z1="${z1% }"
z2="${z2% }"
echo "${z1# }
${z2# }
${z3# }" >outfile

awk -f zozoo.awk myFile
or for 5 rows:
awk -v r=5 -f zozoo.awk myFile
zozoo.awk:
Code:
BEGIN {
  if (!r) r=3
}
{
  i=FNR%r
  a[i]=(i in a)?a[i] OFS $0:$0
}
END {
  for(i=1; i in a;i++)
    print a[i]
  print a[0]
}

Hi vgersh99,

I tried your code
Code:
$ awk -f zozoo.awk file1 >> file 2
awk: syntax error near line 6
awk: illegal statement near line 6
awk: syntax error near line 9
awk: illegal statement near line 9
awk: syntax error near line 9
awk: illegal statement near line 9
awk: illegal statement near line 13

You can use vgersh99's solution. Use nawk for SunOS or Solaris
Code:
nawk ' BEGIN {
  if (!r) r=3
}
{
  i=FNR%r
  a[i]=(i in a)?a[i] OFS $0:$0
}
END {
  for(i=1; i in a;i++)
    print a[i]
  print a[0]
} ' file1

I'm really sorry that I misread your requirement, I initially thought it is a request for transpose
