Progress:
This:
Code:
# sed 's/\<VirtualHost \*:80>/r apache_mod.txt/' < sites-available/default > /etc/apache2/sites-available/default.tmp

Gives this:
Code:
# cat /etc/apache2/sites-available/default.tmp
ServerName ***.com

<r apache_mod.txt
        ServerAdmin webmaster@***.com

        DocumentRoot /var/www/
        <Directory />

Sorry, accidentally had an "s" in my suggestion, took it out. Try:
Code:
sed '/<VirtualHost \*:80>/r /etc/apache2/apache_mod.txt' /etc/apache2/sites-available/default > /etc/apache2/sites-available/default.tmp
