Passwordless sftp works by putting key files in your ~/.ssh/ directory and on the matching dir on the remote server. I'm guessing you're running this code as a different user when it works automatically?

Ok, this is a method of passing port number. I see a reference of this method in this page. So remote_hostname#2200 means connect to the given host but to also pass -p 2200 as argument to the sftp command.
