You can use the -i option I already mentioned, with the caveats I already mentioned that 1) it will create a temp file, 2) it doesn't truly work "in place" since that's not really possible for many kinds of text replacement operations.

Rule of thumb is, never edit your originals, if you make a mistake you've wrecked it.

To avoid rewriting the big file (with a temp file), since you are replacing the same number of bytes, you can either use a hex editor or use dd to edit the file in place. If you are replacing many instances of the string, then edit in place is not the right way to go.
