Problem with pipe into sed

Basically I am trying to write a short script to report total space used on /u0? file systems. This is what I was trying to do:
Code:
df -k /u0? | grep -v kbytes | awk '{ printf $2 "+" }' | sed s/.$// | bc

But it returns no output.

This works however:
Code:
> A=`df -k /u0? |grep -v kbytes | awk '{ printf $2 "+" }'
> echo $A
26214400+2097152+20971520+1063256064+20971520+418381824+
> echo $A | sed s/.$//
26214400+2097152+20971520+1063256064+20971520+418381824
> echo $A | sed s/.$// | bc
1551892480

And can all of this be done in awk (eliminate the grep and sed statements)?

Code:
df -k /0? | nawk '!/kbytes/{sum+=$2}END{print sum}'
