<off topic opinion>Mainly because of its odd and unintuitive syntax. More than a couple of times, I experienced large chunks of perl code that couldn't be maintained but by their respective author(s) (if ever ...). While this can obviously be true with other programming languages, it seems to me this is particularly exacerbated with perl.</off topic opinion>

We had a perl module in production and had to get the guy who wrote it to comment it. He also wrote some specifications. We rewrote it in C.

Thanks jlliagre your correction works like a charm.

Answering ctsgnb question, I do use bash shell and I will run in bac kground and log results to a file.

Code:
sh stat.sh > /tmp/iostats.log &

Now I cn get the process ID and eventually stop the task or monitor it via tail

tail -f /tmp/iostats.log
