awk sub function "quote or slash"

awk sub function "quote or slash"
I struggle to understand why its used slash / instead of doublequotes " in sub function of awk.

This is taken from the manual of awk
Code:
sub(/USA/, "United States", "the USA and Canada")

But this work also
Code:
sub("USA", "United States", "the USA and Canada")

Is there any reason of why to select one before another?

Code:
echo "one two three" | akw '{sub("one two","four");print}'
four three

Edit:
Some more confusion. This code
Code:
awk '$1 ~ /test/'

seems to be the same as
Code:
awk '$1 ~ "test"'



But this does not work
Code:
awk '"test"'

same way as this
Code:
awk '/test/'

Read the section about dynamic regexps in the manual.

I would say, Every programming language has it's own rules, limitations and strength.
You have to work within the boundaries defined by those rules and limitations.(this is for normal user...Smilie)

If you want to expand it's rules and limitation then you can develop your own programming languageSmilie
