paste mutiple files in a loop

file1.txt

each file is in the same directory, hasthe same number of columns but different rows. i want to be able to paste them into one file.

if only those files for which you want to paste are there in the directory, then

is there any way that you can put them in the order you want?

yes...get all the directories in the order into a file say temp

Code:
$ cat temp
f1
f2
f3
f4
f5
f6
$  cat temp | xargs -n2 paste

Code:
-n2

refers to first two files paste at the first time, then the next two files and likewise as in the order specified in temp file...if you want to paste all the files at once and in the order specified in temp file , then remove this option...
