Awk OFS issues
Hi Im trying to tidy up the output of a who command when it writes to a log, everything I've tried doesnt seem to work though, any help would be massively appreciated. Im using the awk command to set the OFS as tab.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
 
who >> /export/home/tjmoore/logusers
 
awk -F 'BEGIN {OFS=$'\t'} {print $1,$2,$3,$4,$5,$6,$7,$8,$9} END' /export/home/tjmoore/logusers > /export/home/tjmoore/logusers1
 
echo "These users were logged in after the night shift has finished and need to
be killed off" > /export/home/tjmoore/logusers2
 
echo "" >> /export/home/tjmoore/logusers2
 
cat /export/home/tjmoore/logusers2 /export/home/tjmoore/logusers1 > /export/home/tjmoore/logusers3

The only errors Im getting are:

Why you are using $ there..?

You have not used FS above.. you should need awk -F "," or something like. for space and tab separated files you don't need to five FS. It will take automatically.Smilie

You cannot use single quotes within single quotes, so OFS=$'\t' will not work like that...

If on Solaris use /usr/xpg4/bin/awk rather than awk

Thanks Pamu Smilie I need to look into awk a bit more seems to be a very useful tool when you know how to use it properly
